SUCCESS STORY

Charles

Friends of Children and Youth

Charles
BENEFICIARY

“Growing up, I only had my father. In 2016, he was incarcerated and has to serve for 5 years. He will be released next year.

I was often picked on by my classmates after they found out about this. They taunted me by saying I had no father or mother, that I was unwanted.

When that happened, I started to have suicidal thoughts. My teacher caught me once when I tried to jump off the school’s rooftop. There was nothing good ahead, and there was just no reason to be motivated for anything.”

It was a hard season of my life, I was only 9 years old.

I came to know Life Community in 2017 as they look after children with parents in prison, and joined their Friends of Children and Youth (FOCY) programme.

A caseworker was assigned to me and he visited me regularly.

Over time, we became more like friends. We talked about various things, from how I was coping with the situation at home, my studies, my friends, and also any negative thoughts or fears. Through sharing, I became aware of how I felt and what I thought, and was able to release the hurt and shame slowly. My caseworker also guided me on how to approach and handle situations in a better way where I would feel I am empowered.

He also brought food rations each month, which helped me and my grandmother out financially. My grandmother has been caring for me and my sister after my father was incarcerated.

I don’t know when the shift happened, I think it was after 6 months to 1 year. I started feeling better about myself with regular participation in the mentoring sessions and workshops organized at Life Community. They taught about character, values, and skills such as entrepreneurship! I had lesser suicidal thoughts and I was surprised that I did not cry anymore when my classmates insulted me.

I also did better in my studies after attending weekly tuition at Life Community (Chinese and Math). I even started liking these two subjects. Things in my life are starting to improve.

Towards the middle of 2019, Charles’s caseworker noticed Charles’s growing rebellious attitude towards his grandmother, most likely due to him entering his adolescent years.

Adolescence is an important transitional stage from puberty to adulthood. The tendency to be influenced by peers and surroundings is high.

Youths from vulnerable backgrounds may not have a parental figure present in their lives, hence, an adult role model’s care, guidance, and empathy is essential to help them navigate the challenges of this particular season, and also steer them away from negative influences and vices.

With this in mind, Charles’s caseworker and mentor will continue to journey with and empower him so he is strong and ready for the next phase of his life.

Update as of June 2020

A year has passed, and Charles has matured over the last twelve months.

With regular attendance at Life Community’s tuition programme, his caseworker and mentor are encouraged that he has passed his PSLE in 2019. He is now attending secondary school.

Charles has grown to be self-motivated. He has shared he can do better and has desires to excel academically, so he can transfer to another school which is nearer to his home. This would save him much travelling time which he can then use for studies, soccer and fishing.

His caseworker has also noticed that Charles is showing more consideration towards others. When he first joined Life Community in 2017, he was easily distracted and would disturb anyone near to him. Today, Charles is able to sit through an entire mentoring session, focus, and hold deeper conversations about his emotions and values, as well as his thoughts on his visits to see his father.

He is able to empathize and understand that his actions can affect others and as a result, is more mindful of his behaviour.

During this circuit breaker period, Charles has also mentioned the frequencies of his quarrels with his grandmother and his sister has reduced. This is a great improvement in his ability to control and manage his emotions as more quarrels tend to result from being in one space for a long period of time.

His grandmother also shared his classmate had recently punched him due to a small misunderstanding. Charles simply walked away and informed his teacher. In the past, he would have retaliated. Again, this is a great improvement from his previously impulsive nature.

Life Community is encouraged to see so much improvement in Charles after continued and ongoing intervention. We will continue to walk with him on this journey until he is stable and equipped for the next phase in his life.

Volunteering Benefits You

Volunteering Benefits You

“Some may feel that volunteering requires a lot of energy and time, but surprisingly you will find it benefits you too.”

Han Hui Ying, a sales and marketing assistant manager, is a volunteer mentor in Life Community Services Society, under the ‘Friends of Children and Youth’ programme. Weekly, she visits her mentee to share a meal, finds out about his week, guides him with his homework and also any challenges he might be facing.

“My hope is to bring much positive energy to children from underprivileged backgrounds.

I am touched that my mentee trusts me enough to share his life with me. Children from vulnerable backgrounds might not receive adequate care and concern from their families, and their family circumstances are challenging. This causes a lot of stress in them, which may cause them to act out or shut others out. I am just glad to see that my mentee has so much vibrant energy, openness and hope towards life.

He also has ambitions for himself. On my visits, I would encourage and guide him on ways to get there, and also to work hard and excel. I believe these children need positive affirmations, just like any other children, just like us adults too.

It is great to work hand in hand with Life Community caseworkers. The child benefits having more role models and consistent adult figure in his/her life. If I encounter any difficulties, I know there is always Life Community’s caseworkers or fellow volunteers I can receive support and advice from.

Some may feel that volunteering requires a lot of energy and time, but surprisingly you will find it benefits you too.

I find my source of energy from my mentee’s progress. To know that they trust you and you are helping them, I feel that it is very meaningful.”

Singapore Olympics Weightlifter as a Mentor

“After I turned 29, I started to have a desire to do things that are meaningful, and found EduGrow on giving.sg. I have always enjoyed interacting with children and with EduGrow, I hope to encourage this group of children to excel in life. Once a week, I will spend 2-3 hours with my mentees. Being a mentor does not take up a lot of time, but it has a huge potential to be impactful and meaningful.”
The first to represent Singapore in the Olympics Female Weightlifting Category 6 years ago (London Olympics 2012), Helena Wong is now giving back to society, as a mentor for children and giving them a listening ear under the Edugrow for Brighter Tomorrows programme.

“After I turned 29, I started to have a desire to do meaningful things, and found EduGrow on giving.sg. I have always enjoyed interacting with children and with EduGrow, I hope to encourage this group of children to excel in life. Once a week, I will spend 2-3 hours with my mentees. Being a mentor does not take up a lot of time, but it has a huge potential to be impactful and meaningful.”

After work, she would head to a flat in marine parade to mentor Farah*, who is 11 years old, and her sister, Hana*, 10 years old. She would bring them to the nearby library to borrow books to read, or to walk at east coast park.

“I will listen to whatever they want to talk about. I am not there to lecture or play a teacher’s role. What they need is someone that can be there for them, and to care for them. Should the opportunity arise, I will teach them using my life experiences.”

Helena recalled an experience where she knew she had made some positive impact as a role model in her mentees – Farah had picked up litter that her neighbour threw on the ground, saying she knows Helena does not like the act of littering.

She felt even more touched when the children’s parents invited her over for a meal during Hari Raya. She believes that parents do love their children but due to some complications and challenges, they are unable to spend much time with their children.

To be able to help the family, be someone that the children can talk to and seek guidance/support from, she feels that her time spent has been very meaningful.

Beautiful Things Take Time

Life Student Care

EDUGROW MENTOR
Nicole Wong

I heard her say quietly to herself, “Beautiful things take time”, whilst patiently colouring a flower she drew.

I’ve been a mentor since April 2016 and it has been, and still is, a learning journey.

It is heartening to see my mentee grow and develop patience, grit, and determination. When I first met her, she would often lose her temper and give up when she could not achieve the quality of work she wanted, she’s quite a perfectionist with very high standards!

Hence, it was a nice surprise when, a year on, I heard her say quietly to herself, “Beautiful things take time”, whilst patiently colouring in a beautiful flower that she drew, each petal a different, carefully chosen colour.

I’ve also volunteered at a Sports Event and found that positive values such as determination, sportsmanship, encouragement of their peers, are inculcated in a fun and engaging way.

I truly believe that engaging children-at-risk, at this young age, and giving them the extra leg-up to keep up with their peers, gives an immeasurable boost to their confidence and helps develop values and attitudes which will benefit them later in life

Life Student Care

TEACHER

“Dear Mrs. Koh and Yishun Life Student Care Teachers,

Thank you for what you have done for my children.

Your centre is a wonderful place for our children to grow up together with other children from different families / schools. The environment has also help built confidence in our children.

Our older son has been with your centre since year 2016 and now followed by our second son.

Your teachers and admin staff are also easy to work with and responsive. They have built trust among the parents, which we appreciate. I feel more assured that my children are at your centre after school.

Lastly, our children enjoys the holiday programmes your centre plans. The programmes really excite the children and they learn something from it. As parents, we are very appreciative of the effort put into the programmes.

Thank you and well done.”
