“Laura is one of my students in the Primary Three class. We noticed she did not have many friends in class and came to understand that she had a few past unresolved misunderstandings and arguments which did not make her too popular with her peers.  This affected her, especially during the first three months of 2019.

I decided to spend more quality time with her to understand. It was a process and after two months, we had slowly developed a bond.  She started to share why she had acted the way she did and as she shared, we discussed how and why her actions could hurt another person, better ways to make friends and be understood by her peers, such as sharing her thoughts and feelings calmly, learning that sharing is important and so is waiting for her turn.

As I shared, I could see that she was listening to what I was saying and over the weeks and months, I saw small improvements in her behaviour. She did not have any ill intention – she just did not know to explain herself in a manner that was appropriate and acted out in frustration when things did not go her way.

At the same time, I wanted Laura to know that she is accepted and cared for as she is, and I did it through words and actions to affirm, advise, and encourage. We also spent time together on her schoolwork and spelling tests, which improved gradually much to her delight.

By the end of 2019, I noticed that she was interacting much better with her classmates. They chatted and played together happily.

More importantly, I am glad that Laura is much happier, smiles more, and is managing her emotions much better than before. Her self-esteem and confidence have improved. My hope is that she will remember that she has overcome these challenges, know that she is able should another challenge arise and carry these values through her life.”

“Dear Mrs. Koh and Yishun Life Student Care Teachers,

Thank you for what you have done for my children.

Your centre is a wonderful place for our children to grow up together with other children from different families / schools. The environment has also help built confidence in our children.

Our older son has been with your centre since year 2016 and now followed by our second son.

Your teachers and admin staff are also easy to work with and responsive. They have built trust among the parents, which we appreciate. I feel more assured that my children are at your centre after school.

Lastly, our children enjoys the holiday programmes your centre plans. The programmes really excite the children and they learn something from it. As parents, we are very appreciative of the effort put into the programmes.

Thank you and well done.”

“Dear Mrs. Koh and Yishun Life Student Care Teachers,

I am writing this letter to express and extend my sincere thanks to Mrs. Koh, the teachers and staff of Life Student Care at Yishun.
Thank you for all you’ve done for me and my child, Nathan, who has been diagnosed with autism.

Firstly, I’m really grateful for to your team for accepting him into your centre. Instead of rejecting us immediately, you warmly welcomed us and took the time to understand our situation and concerns. You gave me hope and confidence that my child will learn and grow in a safe and caring environment.

Nathan is an active boy, with challenges to focus and to follow instructions, especially when things do not go his way.

I am grateful that the teachers are always patient with him and always keeping me updated so that we can collaborate and develop ideas to help Nathan improve.

During the past year, Nathan has been encouraged to join in group activities. I now observe he is able to communicate and mingle with the rest of the children from mainstream schools. He has also learnt to be more independent in his daily activities – showering, keeping his utensils, clearing and packing his own stationery, and many more.

These things seem simple and easy, but every bit of improvement means a lot to me as a mother!

I am really thankful and appreciate the efforts of all the teachers and staff!

Thank you for the guidance and support you’ve given him.”

“Dear Mrs. Koh and Yishun Life Student Care Teachers,

I would like to express my thanks to your centre for taking care of Cavan. I have seen so much improvement in him after he joined your centre.

Before he joined your centre, he was extremely picky with food. He would not eat any fruit or vegetables.

Since joining your centre, not only does he enjoy the lunch served at the centre, he has started eating more variety of food at home! We asked Cavan and found out that your teachers have been encouraging him to try various food.

I am also thankful that his homework is always completed when he returns home from your centre. His spelling tests in school have also improved!

I am pleasantly surprised that parents were also invited to some of the activities you conduct, this allows us to bond with our child!

I like how the centre handles administrative matters and conveys timely information. This is very helpful especially for working parents. The parent portal app is very useful, I am always informed when Cavan leaves the centre.

I am really glad that I made the decision to move Cavan to Life Student Care (Yishun) even though the previous student care centre is much nearer to his school.

Thank you once again for the care shown to Cavan, and to us parents.”

What makes even the most challenging child change for the better? Patience, love and care.

I am encouraged each time I see my students change positively. Even the smallest change is more than enough to remind me, this is why I am doing what I am doing.

The best encouragement I have ever received? It was from my most challenging student, after he graduated and came back to visit. He told me I am his best teacher ever. I will always remember this.

My hope for my students is that they will discover their strengths and abilities, remember the values they have learnt here at Life Student Care, and live it out as they grow up into adulthood.

PARENT

When my son Max joined the centre, his teachers at Life Student Care gave him extra attention for his academic work. They even met up with his school teacher to exchange information to help him further, and arranged for him to join the free tuition service by St Peters Church volunteers for low-income families.

We also required financial assistance and Life Student Care went the extra mile to help us apply for a bursary and connected u with Family Service Centre for more support. Life Community also provided benevolent funding and extended their fee payment date.

We became close to the teachers at Life Student Care. When I had a surgical operation, one of the teachers visited me with a gift of chicken essence. My husband was touched by their care for our son, and us, and gave back by helping to paint their centre. Thank you to the teachers at Life Student Care.
