Life Student Care

TEACHER

“Dear Mrs. Koh and Yishun Life Student Care Teachers,

I am writing this letter to express and extend my sincere thanks to Mrs. Koh, the teachers and staff of Life Student Care at Yishun.
Thank you for all you’ve done for me and my child, Nathan, who has been diagnosed with autism.

Firstly, I’m really grateful for to your team for accepting him into your centre. Instead of rejecting us immediately, you warmly welcomed us and took the time to understand our situation and concerns. You gave me hope and confidence that my child will learn and grow in a safe and caring environment.

Nathan is an active boy, with challenges to focus and to follow instructions, especially when things do not go his way.

I am grateful that the teachers are always patient with him and always keeping me updated so that we can collaborate and develop ideas to help Nathan improve.

During the past year, Nathan has been encouraged to join in group activities. I now observe he is able to communicate and mingle with the rest of the children from mainstream schools. He has also learnt to be more independent in his daily activities – showering, keeping his utensils, clearing and packing his own stationery, and many more.

These things seem simple and easy, but every bit of improvement means a lot to me as a mother!

I am really thankful and appreciate the efforts of all the teachers and staff!

Thank you for the guidance and support you’ve given him.”

-Ms Joey, Mother of Nathan Teo

Life Student Care

TEACHER

“Dear Mrs. Koh and Yishun Life Student Care Teachers,

I would like to express my thanks to your centre for taking care of Cavan. I have seen so much improvement in him after he joined your centre.

Before he joined your centre, he was extremely picky with food. He would not eat any fruit or vegetables.

Since joining your centre, not only does he enjoy the lunch served at the centre, he has started eating more variety of food at home! We asked Cavan and found out that your teachers have been encouraging him to try various food.

I am also thankful that his homework is always completed when he returns home from your centre. His spelling tests in school have also improved!

I am pleasantly surprised that parents were also invited to some of the activities you conduct, this allows us to bond with our child!

I like how the centre handles administrative matters and conveys timely information. This is very helpful especially for working parents. The parent portal app is very useful, I am always informed when Cavan leaves the centre.

I am really glad that I made the decision to move Cavan to Life Student Care (Yishun) even though the previous student care centre is much nearer to his school.

Thank you once again for the care shown to Cavan, and to us parents.”

My life as a Social Worker

IN THE NEWS

My life as a Social Worker

“People might not understand their background, the environment and circumstances these children grew up in. Most of them lack their parents’ companion and care, and this sets them back compared to others. However, I believe they all have their potential and with encouragement and guidance from the right people around them, they can still achieve their goals when they are adults.”

Gabriel Lee has been a social worker with Life Community since he graduated with a degree in marketing. He decided to pursue a career in the social sector instead, hoping to guide/mentor children and youths from underprivileged backgrounds.

He handles cases of children and youths, aged 12-19 years old, under the Friends of Children and Youth program. This program serves beneficiaries whose parents are presently/formerly incarcerated.

Recalling one incident when he first started, “One of the children told me I will give up on him soon”. But Gabriel never did.

“I sincerely wanted to help him, and I wanted him to know this, that someone cares. Slowly over time, we built trust which changed everything. He gradually became more responsible. He started to care for his siblings and had plans to improve himself. Even though this child has graduated from our program, he still remembers our time together. Seeing him grow and improve so much brings me much satisfaction. It is why I am doing what I do.”

Truth be told, youths have their own thinking and peer influences, and sometimes they disappear and us caseworkers have a hard time contacting them. However, we understand their situations, and still try to reach out to them in whatever ways we can. We hope through this, they will know that someone has not given up on them and hope to guide them on the correct path in life.

My wish is for society to be understanding and not label them quickly. With guidance and a helping hand given, change is possible.”

Life Community provides our children and youths case workers to conduct monthly house visitations, workshops and activities to build character and life skills, provide mentoring and guidance, as well as food rations.

Update in 2020

Today Gabriel in his seventh year with Life Community and is as passionate as ever in what he does.

He is now the Assistant Manager of Friends of Children & Youth program, mentors a group of caseworkers under him, and looks forward to seeing more children and youths’ lives being transformed.
