What makes even the most challenging child change for the better? Patience, love and care.

I am encouraged each time I see my students change positively. Even the smallest change is more than enough to remind me, this is why I am doing what I am doing.

The best encouragement I have ever received? It was from my most challenging student, after he graduated and came back to visit. He told me I am his best teacher ever. I will always remember this.

My hope for my students is that they will discover their strengths and abilities, remember the values they have learnt here at Life Student Care, and live it out as they grow up into adulthood.

When my son Max joined the centre, his teachers at Life Student Care gave him extra attention for his academic work. They even met up with his school teacher to exchange information to help him further, and arranged for him to join the free tuition service by St Peters Church volunteers for low-income families.

We also required financial assistance and Life Student Care went the extra mile to help us apply for a bursary and connected u with Family Service Centre for more support. Life Community also provided benevolent funding and extended their fee payment date.

We became close to the teachers at Life Student Care. When I had a surgical operation, one of the teachers visited me with a gift of chicken essence. My husband was touched by their care for our son, and us, and gave back by helping to paint their centre. Thank you to the teachers at Life Student Care.

”I would like to thank Mary for what he has done for my son, Gerald. Before joining Life Student Care, I would get reports from teachers that he was always running around and was angry. None of us knew the reason why.

I am grateful to Mary who tried different methods to get through to engage/understand him, which she finally did.

I did not know that my son was stressed about having too many weekend tuition classes, particularly his Chinese tuition class. Mary managed to speak to him about this, and he mentioned that he was not allowed to ask any questions in his Chinese Tuition class, which made him feel judged, helpless and uncared for.

After we resolved this issue, he became much calmer and happier. He graduated from Life Student Care after his PSLE, which he excelled with good grades.

Today, he even gives back by volunteering at Life Student Care as a boys’ basketball coach during the holidays. I am proud of him.

Thank you to Mary and Life Student Care for your efforts and care towards my son.”

Even at the age of 10, I was not able to read simple words like “Chair”, “Walk”, “How”. I was falling behind, and I would also get into fights and squabbles in school. I could not control myself.

It was also the year I joined Life Community. I had mentors assigned to me who tutored me in my studies, especially in the area of phonics. They were so patient, caring and encouraging; I felt they accepted me for who I am and truly wanted the best for me.

With their guidance, I took interest to learning. I was also growing in my self-confidence; could control myself more; started respecting others; and begin to share what I have with others. My mentors say that I am a more sensible and teachable boy now!

I also passed my PSLE! I am happy, my parents are very happy, so are the mentors at Life Community.

I am in secondary school now and I know I will do well. I have also been appointed as a Student Councillor, something I did not think I could be three years ago!

“I was abandoned by my mum when I was a baby. My dad has brain damage due to drug overdoes, and he has been staying at a community hospital. My grandmother takes care of me. She is 80 years old.

When I was younger, my grandmother will take the bus with me to school from Woodlands to Bukit Purmei everyday. It takes about 1.5 hours to get to school. Even though she walks very slowly, she will still go with me.

I was also hyperactive, and to get what I want, I will bully others. I found it hard to tell people what I want, to tell them my thoughts or ideas. I was not doing well in school, I did not know how to do well.

I joined Life Community a few years ago. I have a caseworker who will visit me regularly. I also joined the “I Coach You” Tuition program to improve my studies. Slowly, I can see that I can control myself, my anger and frustration much better than before.

Guess what, I also passed my PSLE! I have improved so much and want to continue on this path.”
